“The Hippocrates program was a wonderful experience, and I would definitely recommend it to a friend! Hippocrates is a very unique experience and I was able to gain so much from this program in just 2 weeks that I will remember throughout my life.
Not only was this experience valuable in terms of my academic and career goals, but was also important in showing me another culture, giving me life experiences that I can share with others, and in networking and making connections with others. Out of all of the study-abroad/ medical observation programs I have been on, Hippocrates is by far the most organized, well planned, and executed program. Through this program I met some of the kindest people, and had the chance to explore the culture, food, architecture, history, and so much more in Thessaloniki!
This is a wonderful program for anyone considering the medical field/profession because it gave a holistic view of how the medical system worked through the chance to observe in two different hospitals and to see a variety of specialties! I am so grateful that we were also given an additional opportunity to shadow in the evening because it showed me a different side to the hospital and also gave me the chance to see how much the doctors and nurses do for their patients and how long their work day can be, but they still treat each patient with the same level of engagement, kindness, and generosity. It was so nice to hear from the doctors, residents, dentists, etc about their opinions on healthcare, the medical education system, and about their own personal experiences.
Even through I have known that I wanted to work in the medical field for several years, this program was important for me because I gained an insight into how each of the specialties differ to see what might interest me in the future, and also showed my how the medical systems in Greece and the United States are different. Since I have been studying public health in college, I was able to make connections to how the different systems affect the patient populations, overall health of each geographical location, how they affect the medical professionals, and also the pros and cons unique to each country.
Having a broader understanding of healthcare and global health as well as cross cultural communication and cultural humility is useful in pursuing a medical career.”
