The Program

Life Inside the Hospital

Shadowing a physician involves closely observing their daily routines, interactions with patients and colleagues, and performance of procedures. Following the guidelines set by the AAMC for pre-health experiences abroad, our shadowing program provides an observation-only, hands-off experience.

At Hippocrates, students have the opportunity to shadow in various departments at the Hospital for 5 hours each day, 4 times per week, resulting in over 20 shadowing hours weekly. These sessions cover both clinical and surgical departments, providing a comprehensive insight into various medical specialties. Typically, students shadow in pairs and rotate through the departments every few days. Although specific specialty preferences can't be guaranteed, we always strive to accommodate individual interests.

Shadowing experiences can vary greatly depending on factors such as specialty, situation, practice setting, and the personality of the physician being shadowed. Some sessions may be rich and interactive, with physicians readily answering questions, while others may involve more passive observation. Regardless, each shadowing experience offers valuable insights into the day-to-day realities of medical practice.

“The experience is once in a lifetime and you’ll get such a great balance of both Greek medical care and culture! It’s also a great way to make connections with doctors and learn about their experience and path to their profession.”

“This was truly a life-changing experience! Getting the opportunity to shadow healthcare professionals, travel, and adapt to a new culture in a 2-week period is challenging, rewarding, and so special for someone to do.”

Life Outside the Hospital

  • Cultural Excursions

Our program includes a variety of weekly cultural excursions designed to showcase the beauty and history of Greece. From visits to iconic sites like the world-famous archaeological site of Vergina, the native town of Alexander the Great, to trips to Mount Olympus, the home of the Gods in Greek mythology, our activities are designed to develop a broader global perspective, cultivate open-mindedness, and promote strong bonds among team members.

  • Culinary Experiences

Food is a massive part of Thessalonians! In addition to our cultural excursions, our program also features immersive culinary experiences. We take our students to authentic Greek restaurants, where they can indulge in traditional Greek dishes crafted with fresh, locally-sourced ingredients.

Greek cuisine, renowned for its emphasis on healthy and nutritious ingredients, is a cornerstone of the Mediterranean

diet - one of the healthiest in the world. From flavorful moussaka to succulent souvlaki, our group meals offer a taste of Greece's rich culinary heritage while promoting the benefits of a healthy Mediterranean lifestyle.

  • Housing

Apartment-style housing is provided for the duration of the program, ensuring a pleasant and convenient stay in Thessaloniki. Strategically located in the heart of the city, our accommodations offer easy access to all top attractions within walking distance. Each apartment is fully furnished and equipped with amenities to ensure a comfortable stay, including a kitchen, fridge, washing machine, WiFi, towels, and bed linen. Depending on the size of the apartment, students may have a single room or share with one roommate of the same gender.

  • Arrivals and Departures

Before the program commences, we host pre-departure orientation online meetings to ensure students are fully prepared for their journey. These sessions offer detailed information about the hospitals, site managers, program housing addresses, and logistics for the arrival day.

Upon arrival at Thessaloniki airport, a team member will greet the students at the baggage claim area and guide them safely and efficiently to their assigned housing, ensuring a seamless transition.

Throughout their stay, our site managers will maintain consistent communication to assist students with any aspect of the program. When it's time to conclude the program, we arrange for a shuttle service to transport students to the airport, ensuring a hassle-free departure.
