The Program
Life Inside the Hospital
Shadowing a physician involves closely observing their daily routines, interactions with patients and colleagues, and performance of procedures. Following the guidelines set by the AAMC for pre-health experiences abroad, our shadowing program provides an observation-only, hands-off experience.
At Hippocrates, students have the opportunity to shadow in various departments at the Hospital for 5 hours each day, 4 times per week, resulting in over 20 shadowing hours weekly. These sessions cover both clinical and surgical departments, providing a comprehensive insight into various medical specialties. Typically, students shadow in pairs and rotate through the departments every few days. Although specific specialty preferences can't be guaranteed, we always strive to accommodate individual interests.
Shadowing experiences can vary greatly depending on factors such as specialty, situation, practice setting, and the personality of the physician being shadowed. Some sessions may be rich and interactive, with physicians readily answering questions, while others may involve more passive observation. Regardless, each shadowing experience offers valuable insights into the day-to-day realities of medical practice.

Arrivals and Departures
Before the program commences, we host pre-departure orientation online meetings to ensure students are fully prepared for their journey. These sessions offer detailed information about the hospitals, site managers, program housing addresses, and logistics for the arrival day.
Upon arrival at Thessaloniki airport, a team member will greet the students at the baggage claim area and guide them safely and efficiently to their assigned housing, ensuring a seamless transition.
Throughout their stay, our site managers will maintain consistent communication to assist students with any aspect of the program. When it's time to conclude the program, we arrange for a shuttle service to transport students to the airport, ensuring a hassle-free departure.
